The corporate world, where buzzwords and jargon reign supreme, and culture is king (or queen, we don't discriminate here). But what happens when culture becomes cultish?

Now, before you think I've gone off the deep end, hear me out. Recruitment processes that focus more on "attitude" than competence? Check. Incentive systems that reinforce control over employees' thinking and behaviour? Check. Unethical practices and policies that centralise power at the top? Check, check, and check.

According to the founder of IHOP (no, not the pancake place), there are several ways to recognise the difference between a religious community and a cult. I believe some of these can be found in the corporate world. Let’s explore a few:

 - Cultic workplaces tend to discourage free thought and expression, penalising employees who voice ideas that deviate from the consensus.

- In a corporate cult, employees who express unpopular ideas or do not align with the company values may face unfair dismissal, even if their ideas are constructive and helpful to the company.

 - Corporate cults often engage in unethical or even illegal practices that serve to centralise power and control in the hands of a few at the top. They may also have inflexible business models that do not adapt to changing market conditions.

 - Cultic organisations demand unquestioning loyalty to their leaders, discouraging constructive criticism and promoting cronyism. Hiring and firing policies may be based on personal connections rather than competence.

 - Your workplace should never replace your actual family and community. If your company encourages you to centre your life around work, it might be time to reconsider where your loyalties lie.

Disrespecting boundaries and personal lives

 - In cultic workplaces, boundaries and personal lives may not be respected, and employees may be treated like children. This can lead to a lack of trust, empowerment, and involvement.

Recognising some warning signs may save you time and energy by avoiding an unwanted situation. Always remember that your working life is in your control. Set strong boundaries, negotiate contractual agreements in your favour and don’t fall prey to decisions out of your control. After all, it’s your life.
